Podiatrist in Washington, DC – Expert Foot & Ankle Care

Why Washington, DC Residents Choose DMV Foot & Ankle

Dual Board-Certified Expertise

Dr. Alex Mattia holds certifications from both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM)—a distinction held by fewer than 30% of practicing podiatrists. This dual certification means you receive care from a physician qualified in both surgical intervention and comprehensive medical management.

MedStar Georgetown-Trained

Dr. Mattia completed his residency at the prestigious MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Podiatric Surgery Residency Program, one of the nation's top training programs for foot and ankle surgery. His training included advanced techniques in reconstructive surgery, diabetic limb salvage, and trauma care.

Conservative-First Treatment Philosophy

Surgery is always our last resort. We exhaust all evidence-based conservative treatments before considering surgical intervention. In fact, over 90% of our patients achieve complete resolution of their foot and ankle conditions without surgery.

Advanced Regenerative Medicine

DMV Foot & Ankle is one of the few Washington, DC practices offering regenerative medicine treatments including peptide therapy and stem cell products. Conditions We Treat at Our Washington, DC Office

Heel Pain & Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, affecting approximately 10% of the population. Our comprehensive treatment approach achieves an 85-90% success rate without surgery, utilizing custom orthotics, laser therapy, and regenerative medicine protocols.

Sports Injuries

From weekend warriors to competitive athletes, we treat the full spectrum of foot and ankle sports injuries including ankle sprains, stress fractures, Achilles tendinitis, and turf toe. Our goal is rapid return to activity with protocols designed to prevent re-injury.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects over 37 million Americans, and foot complications are among the most serious risks. Dr. Mattia has specialized training in diabetic limb salvage and provides comprehensive preventive care including regular foot exams, wound care, and custom diabetic footwear.

Bunions & Hammertoes

These common foot deformities can cause significant pain and difficulty with footwear. We offer both conservative management and, when necessary, minimally invasive surgical correction with faster recovery times than traditional techniques.

Toenail Fungus & Ingrown Toenails

Fungal nail infections affect up to 14% of the population. Our laser therapy treatments offer a safe, effective alternative to oral medications with their associated risks. Ingrown toenails can be permanently corrected with a simple in-office procedure.

Custom Orthotics

Medical-grade custom orthotics address biomechanical issues that contribute to foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and other conditions. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, our orthotics are precision-crafted from molds of your feet and designed for your specific condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I should see a podiatrist?

You should see a podiatrist if you experience persistent foot or ankle pain lasting more than a few days, pain that interferes with daily activities, visible deformities, numbness or tingling, wounds that won't heal (especially if you have diabetes), or changes in skin or nail color or texture.

What's the difference between a podiatrist and an orthopedist?

Podiatrists (DPM) specialize exclusively in the foot and ankle, completing four years of podiatric medical school followed by three years of surgical residency focused entirely on this area. Orthopedists (MD/DO) are generalist bone and joint surgeons who may subspecialize in foot and ankle. For conditions below the ankle, a podiatrist typically offers more specialized expertise.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Mattia?

Most insurance plans do not require a referral to see a podiatrist. However, some HMO plans may require one. Contact your insurance company or our office to confirm.

How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

With proper treatment, most patients experience significant improvement within 6-12 weeks. However, complete resolution may take 6-12 months. Early intervention typically leads to faster recovery—the longer you wait to seek treatment, the longer healing generally takes.

Does DMV Foot & Ankle offer same-day appointments?

Yes, we reserve appointment slots each day for patients with urgent concerns such as acute injuries, severe pain, or diabetic foot emergencies. Call 202-726-1800 as early as possible for same-day availability.
