Dr. Alex Mattia, DPM, FACFAS, DABFAS, DABPM
Foot and Ankle Surgeon
Dr. Alex Mattia is the President and Founder of DMV Foot & Ankle in Washington, DC, where he delivers advanced podiatric care rooted in dual board certifications from both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM). His clinical expertise centers on three pillars: Regenerative Medicine, Diabetic Limb Salvage, and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
Trained at the prestigious MedStar Georgetown University Hospital surgical residency program, Dr. Mattia combines cutting-edge treatment approaches with a patient-first philosophy focused on exhausting conservative options before considering surgical intervention.
A Hometown Doctor Serving the Community That Raised Him
Dr. Alex S. Mattia is a dual board-certified podiatrist and the founder of DMV Foot & Ankle in Washington, DC. Born and raised in Prince George's County, Maryland, Dr. Mattia's path to podiatry began with a personal experience—a foot and ankle injury as a teenager that required treatment by a podiatrist. That firsthand journey from patient to provider shaped his approach to medicine: he understands what it feels like to be on the exam table, and he brings that empathy to every patient encounter.

After graduating magna cum laude from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dr. Mattia earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. He then returned home to complete his surgical residency at the MedStar Georgetown Podiatric Surgery Residency Program—one of the most respected podiatric surgical training programs in the country—affiliated with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

For Dr. Mattia, staying in the DMV wasn't a question. This is home.
Board Certifications & Credentials
Dr. Mattia holds dual board certifications that distinguish him from many podiatrists:

-
American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS): Board Certified in Foot Surgery (2024); RRA-Qualified (2018)
-
American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM): Board Certified (2020)
-
American College of Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons (ACPPS): Certified in Regenerative Podiatric Medicine (2025)
He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and maintains active licensure in Washington, DC and Maryland.
Clinical Philosophy: Partnership Over Paternalism
Dr. Mattia believes that the best outcomes happen when patients and providers work together. His approach begins with attentive listening—understanding not just the symptoms, but the full journey that brought a patient through his door. What have they tried? What are their goals? How do they want to be treated?

From there, Dr. Mattia uses his expertise to offer solutions that patients have a real part in deciding. The goal is always rehabilitation and restored function, with the patient as an active partner in their care—not a passive recipient of instructions.
Regenerative Medicine: A New Paradigm
As a board-certified surgeon, Dr. Mattia has the skills to operate when surgery is truly necessary. But his certification in Regenerative Podiatric Medicine reflects a deeper philosophy: surgery should be a last resort, not a first option.

Regenerative medicine—including peptide therapy, stem cell products derived from donated umbilical tissue, fat pad allografts, and Class IV laser therapy—opens treatment pathways that traditional podiatric training rarely emphasizes. Dr. Mattia actively pursues these modalities because they offer patients the potential for healing and pain relief without the risks, downtime, and costs of invasive surgery.

His message to patients is clear: Before we talk about surgery, let's exhaust the options that can help your body heal itself.
